Belgo Noord is located on Chalk Farm Road in Camden Town and is a Belgian-themed restaurant specialising in mussels and beer.
The decor is quite modern and cheery, with curved walls, high glass ceilings and metal tables and chairs. All of this is meant to evoke a bit of a brewing cellar-like atmosphere which is reinforced by the servers who all wear robes like those of Trappist monks. Rest assured that these “monks” are extremely knowledgeable about the food and drinks options at Belgo. This can come in handy for those of us who are not experts on the fine points of Belgian cuisine and brewing techniques.
Mussels are the specialty here, and are offered steamed in sauces ranging from Thai to Provencal. They are rope-grown and delivered fresh daily, so if you like mussels, this is your place.
For those who prefer other things, there are some very good rotisserie chicken dishes on the menu, as well as steak and a traditional Belgian Beef Carbonnade. Of course, there are plenty of “frites” which are served traditionally with Belgian mayonnaise.
The restaurant offers a fixed price express lunch menu from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and the very popular Beat The Clock menu from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. During these two hours, diners ordering from the Beat The Clock menu get their meal for the price of the time at which they order, so anywhere from £5.00 to £7.00.
For each adult main course you order at Belgo, one child can order free from the Mini Belgo menu.
The beer at the restaurant is amazing. There are over 800 beers brewed in Belgium, and while Belgo doesn’t have them all, they do make quite a good effort.
There are beers on tap, bottled Blonde Beers and Ales, and more than 20 kinds of Trappist and Abbey Beers. There are a dizzying variety of White Beers, Amber Beers, Dark Beers and Fruit Beers such as Passion fruit and Chocolate.
Belgo is a Belgian beer lover’s heaven.
