Best restaurants in London are rarely as interesting as Les Trois Garcons. The restaurant is located near Bethnal Green Road, and was founded by Hassan Abdullah, Michel Lassere and Stefan Karlson.
The men were friends, antique dealers and designers who originally bought the building as a private house project, and filled it with their treasures from all over the globe. In 2000 they were persuaded to open it to the public as a restaurant and it has been wildly popular ever since.
The romance of its fabulously over the top décor is legendary, and the food is lovely, too. Les Trois Garcons is so elaborately decorated and surreal it seems as if it were lifted from a Salvador Dali landscape. If you are sick to death of the austere minimalist design common to many fine restaurants, then this is your antidote.
Taxidermy seems to be of great interest to the designers, you will see stuffed giraffe, lion, swan, shark, swordfish, bear, monkey, tiger, crocodile and numerous birds and antelopes. Many of the mounted creatures also sport large and glittery costume jewellery sets.
Chandeliers, baubles and a fantastic collection of handbags hang from the ceilings. There is so much to see and enjoy, you could spend all evening just wandering the place and taking it all in, but then you’d miss out on the food which would be a real pity.
This is a great spot for a romantic evening out; it will be an event you will both remember with pleasure for a long time.
The menu is French, the servers are French, and the attitude is oh-so French without being too pretentious or haughty. The staff is quite accommodating and helpful, and is extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine.
There is a nice tasting menu with wine pairing that is exquisite; the menu changes frequently but often includes things like Scottish Diver Scallops with Green Asparagus and Pea Puree, and Dry aged Longhorn Beef Filet with Fresh Morel, Pomme Puree and Tarragon Jus.
Other favourites are Smoked Sea Trout with Potato Salad, Pink Grapefruit, Caper and Pickled Baby Vegetables, and Rib eye of Scottish beef with kalian, braised jerusalem artichoke, balsamic red wine and shallot sauce.
