Cinemas in London
- Shortwave Cinema Stands Up for the Little Guy

Many cinemas in London are corporate, faceless, and generic but there are special places like the Shortwave Cinema that stand out. Owned and operated by Shortwave Films, this is a place dedicated to promoting new and emerging talent on the independent film scene.

Cinemas in London

The Shortwave Cinema is located in Bermondsey Square, and is quite small by theatrical standards, having only a 52 seat capacity. It opened in 2009 and has hosted a variety of foreign film festivals as well as screening a wide range of lesser known independent movies.

The film company also does a great deal of work in the community, sponsoring workshops throughout the South London area to expose more people to the amazing world of film.

The seats at Shortwave Cinema are quite comfortable and are fully accessible. Indeed, sitting in the audience feels a bit like being in a very large living room with 50 or so of your close friends.

The screen is quite close to the seating area, adding to the intimate feel.

The café bar area is quite nice, with an outside seating area and free Wireless Internet access. This is a great place to sit down and enjoy a meal or a snack, and they also have a full bar stocked and ready to serve you.

The staff are friendly and well-informed, and seem to all be film buffs as well. Unlike some art house cinemas who project an independent image while being managed behind the scenes by some conglomerate, Shortwave Cinema is the real thing; just some blokes who love the media of film and want to spread the word about all of the exciting and new things going on in the world of independent film.

You can actually hire out this venue for a private screening, so you might like to gather up 50 of your friends or co-workers and have a private film festival.

Cinemas in London like the Shortwave Cinema are certainly one of the things that make the city such an interesting place to be.
