Covent Garden Hotel in London
- Woody Allen’s Pick for Match Point (2005)

Covent Garden Hotel

The Covent Garden Hotel in London has an enviable location in the heart of the theatre district. Owned by Firmdale Hotels, the Covent Garden is a boutique-style destination. It has 58 individually designed rooms and suites, most of which have lovely views of the London skyline.

It is a perfect location for a movie that wishes to highlight the allure of the luxurious and rarefied world of the wealthy Londoner.

Woody Allen’s Match Point is a dark thriller about love versus money with a distinctive British edge.

Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is a tennis pro with ambitious designs to better his station in life. The movie chronicles his path to achieve the life he so covets, and the extremes to which he is willing to go to preserve it.

Chris strikes up a friendship with a wealthy client, Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode). This proves to be a strategic friendship, as Chris promptly courts Tom’s dull but rich sister Chloe (Emily Mortimer) while also dallying with Tom’s exciting girlfriend Nola (Scarlett Johansson).

Circumstances inevitably come to a breaking point as Chris struggles to balance his desire for wealth and security with his desire for love and excitement.

The hotel was a filming location in Match Point, and the hotel lobby and the restaurant both are featured prominently. Brasserie Max is the fine dining restaurant at the hotel, and was an inspired choice for a pivotal scene in the film. Chris and Emily dine at Brasserie Max with Tom and Nola after the opera.

It is an awkward meal, and the class difference between the wealthy siblings who never need to notice menu prices and their partners who must count every shilling becomes painfully obvious.

This fabulous hotel is a great place to feel like a wealthy Londoner, if only for the evening.
