East Street Market is a busy street market located in Walworth, South London. It is known locally as "East Lane" or just "The Lane". The market here has officially been in operation since 1880.
Charlie Chaplin was born on East Street and frequented the market here along with the rest of the locals for many years.
The market is open every day except Monday, although the biggest market day here is Sunday. On Sundays you can expect about 250 stalls to set up selling all sorts of goods. During the week, the market is smaller but it still offers a nice selection of everyday items.
If you are passing by East Street, there is no excuse not to stop and pick up some of the bargain-priced fresh produce. You will never want to pay supermarket prices again after you experience the value and freshness at this street Market.
This market has an excellent selection of African and Caribbean fruits and vegetables, as well. African materials and clothing are also sold at the market, along with dishes, domestics, and stationery.
You can also buy CDs, DVDs, and small electronics at the market. This market has a bit of everything for sale, and it is a true local landmark.
The people who live in this less that wealthy area really do shop the market and depend on it for everything from their daily meals to their entertainment and clothing. It is also a community meeting place, where residents are likely to run into their neighbours and friends perusing the same goods they are browsing through.
Unlike some other markets in London that seem a bit planned and arranged to suit the tourist trade, the market has grown up organically, and its goods and services have evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of its local population. One thing is for sure; you won't be rubbing elbows with a lot of tourists here.
East Street is a great place to immerse yourself in the daily rhythms of South London life.
