Liberty of London Fabric
– Classic Art Nouveau

Liberty of London fabric is known the world over; the quality of their designs is unparalleled. The Liberty store is located in Soho, in a Tudor style building built just to house the business.

Liberty of London Fabric

Arthur Liberty started the business in 1874, selling objects d’art, fabric, and home decorations from the Far East. It was successful from the very start and soon he had expanded to meet the ever increasing demand for the kind of merchandise Liberty offered.

By 1884, Liberty opened its “costume department” and fashionable apparel became another wildly successful part of the Liberty line.

In the 1890’s Liberty worked closely with British designers in the forefront of the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movement, developing their iconic styles of fabric which were used for both clothing and furniture.

In 1924, Arthur Liberty had the tudor style structure on Great Marlborough Street built using the wood from ships, the HMS Hindustan and the HMS Impregnable. The building was designed specially to highlight the Liberty collections of goods; three light wells were incorporated around which smaller rooms were arranged.

It was Arthur Liberty's intention that browsing in the store should be similar to visiting a comfortable home, and he succeeded admirably in this endeavour.

As in years past, Liberty still has a strong commitment to British designers and suppliers, as well as highlighting their own in house fabrics and design. You can buy fine clothing made using Liberty fabrics at the shop, in a tremendous variety or colours and designs.

They also sell general goods like cushions and throws, linens, and even stationery of their own design. Of course, the fabrics are also available by the metre, and their interior design services can create a whole new look for your home using them.

Liberty also offers the Liberty Stitch program, a sewing school where you can learn to use those amazing fabrics, or even learn to knit or crochet. Liberty also offers a wide range of designer clothing and accessories, jewellery, and cosmetics.

Something special about Liberty is their vintage departments where you can buy fabulous, impeccably kept vintage clothing and furniture.

At Liberty of London, fabric is paramount but there is also a great deal more to enjoy.
