Best London Pubs
– Waxy O’Connor’s Enchants

Of the many London pubs, Waxy O’Connor’s must be one of the most unusual. It is a massive place, located between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, with entrances off Rupert Street and Wardour Street.

London Pubs

From the outside, you might mistake it for just another faux-Irish pub, but once you get inside you are in for quite a surprise. The pub is a warren of rooms and passageways spreading over six levels with a variety of rooms and bars with their own special themes.

The showpiece and heart of the pub is the Tree Room, with an enormous preserved beech tree lining the walls and branches carved out into seating areas. Patrons have described this as being like something out of Lord of the Rings or Pan’s Labyrinth.

It is what gives the pub its fun tree house feel and it really takes your breath away when you see it for the first time.

The Church Bar is another lovely area, with wooden benches, flagstone flooring, and stained glass it truly looks the part of a medieval church. The Cottage Bar is a very large area with lots of seating, a fireplace, and a warm and cosy cottage décor.

The Dargle Bar and Rupert St Bar are in other rooms at the pub, and the Mezzanine is a good place to perch and overlook the action in the Rupert St Bar below.

Waxy O’Connor’s has a nice welcoming atmosphere, with a friendly staff and fun-loving patrons. It can get very busy, after the offices close and on weekends so you might want to get there a bit early to lay claim to your favourite spot.

The drink and food are typical pub fare, about as pricey as you would expect given the location, but good quality all the same.

They have big screen televisions for watching sports matches and live music nights as well. On Sundays you can hear traditional Irish music which is quite a nice thing in such a magical setting.

When looking at London pubs, Waxy O’Connor’s is something quite special indeed.
