London sailing schools are a good place to pick up the basics of handling a boat, but you will find that most London clubs are also very eager and willing to teach newcomers about sailing skills. Even if you are an old hand at sailing, you are likely to pick up a thing or two from these avid sport fans.
The River Thames is a lovely place to sail, so if you have any interest in boating, sailing while you are visiting London would be an excellent pastime. The London Corinthian Sailing Club is a nice place to start. This club is located on the banks of the Thames, at Linden House, Hammersmith. The club offers a variety of RYA courses at their riverfront location, everything from dinghy sailing to offshore theory classes. The club also offers hands-on opportunities to cruise or race in dinghies. The Wembley Sailing Club is another good place for those looking for a chance to sail. This club has been in operation in Brent, Northwest London at the Welsh Harp Reservoir (pictured) for over 50 years. You can take RYA courses here, as well as taking part in the racing that goes on with several different classes of sailboat. For those who aren't so keen on racing, there are also many opportunities to simply cruise around on the water at a more leisurely pace. The Wembley Sailing Club works hard to make sailing fun and accessible for all. The club plans activities like treasure hunts and picnics on the water and the members go out of their way to make newcomers feel really welcome at the club. Wembley sponsors a very respected Optimist dinghy sailing program for children, recognizing that getting the next generation interested in sailing is just as important as enjoying it themselves. London sailing schools can teach you the basics, but sailing in the city becomes really special when you get out on the water and experience some of the excellent boating opportunities for yourself.
