London Underground Zones cover the whole city, with the majority of the central London attractions being in the first zone. The Tube was the first underground railway system in the world when its opened in 1863, and in 1890 it was the first to introduce electric trains.
There are 270 stations on the line which winds an amazing 250 miles through the city, making it the longest urban subway system in the world.
Over 3 million people travel London via the Tube every day.
When you consider that the total population of Greater London is approximately 8 million, this statistic becomes even more impressive.
Clearly the Tube is an integral and important part of the life of many Londoners.
There are 12 lines that cover all of London, and each Tube station is located just a short walk from the next one, making it easy to travel the city simply by taking the Underground and walking to your destination.
The Tube does not run 24 hours a day.
Although the hours vary somewhat during holidays and special events, the underground system generally operates from about 5 AM to 12:30 AM, seven days a week, closing for maintenance during the off hours.
You must purchase a Travelcard or Oyster Card to travel on the Tube, and each zone has different rates.
Travelcards can be bought at a limited number of manned stations, or from automated machines, many of which accept credit or debit cards.
Travelling via the subway is easier and less expensive if you plan your trips around the peak rush hour travel times; not only will your ticket cost less, but the trains will be much less crowded if you avoid the commuter hours.
The best option for visitors to London who do not need to travel in the early morning is the All-Day Travelcard that allows the holder unlimited travel all day from 9:30 AM onwards for one low fee.
The London Underground make it possible for millions of residents and visitors to travel quickly and efficiently through the city every day.
