Mudchute City Farm known officially as Mudchute Park and Farm is a 32 acre expanse of green space on the Isle of Dogs, south of Canary Wharf in the Docklands area of London.
The area was formed in the 1860s when construction of the Millwall Dock led to soils and silt from the Thames being dumped there by conveyor, literally forming a mudchute of fertile and hilly land that became a haven for wildlife.
In 1974 there were plans in the works to build here which mobilized the local community to have the area turned into a protected parkland. Over the years, animals and a farm were introduced.
These days Mudchute Park and Farm works hard to preserve this open space for the enjoyment of the local population as well as visitors from all over.
The farm is home to a large assortment of barnyard animals. You can see cows and horses, donkeys and llamas, and sheep and goats. Many of the animals are rare breeds that are not commonly seen elsewhere.
At Mudchute, children of all ages are encouraged to pet the animals and interact with them. Many of the animals are collected at about 4 PM every day to spend the night in their shelters; visitors are encouraged to help with the round up and this is an exciting event most children love.
There is an equestrian centre on the premises offering riding lessons to everyone ages 7 and up.
Another big attraction at the farm is the restaurant. Mudchute Kitchen was established in 2007 by chefs Philippa Davis and Louise Johnston. Everything served at Mudchute Kitchen is homemade, from the bread to the baked beans, using mostly British produce and free-range meats and eggs.
In addition to their own garden allotment, the kitchen benefits from the wild spaces around them full of wild forage ingredients such as crab apples, wild thyme, blackberries, and nettles.
Mudchute City Farm is a wonderful place to bring children, it is a little slice of country life in the heart of London.
