House Museums in London
- Sir John Soane’s Museum

One of the most curious museums in London is the Sir John Soane’s Museum. Sir John Soane was a legendary neo-classical architect who lived and worked in the house in the 19th century.

His style was very influential, and one of his most famous designs was the famed Bank of England building.

Soane devised some very interesting architectural features in his home, one of the most notable being the top lit areas to the rear of the house, which are just a miniature form of the lighting arrangement he designed for the Bank of England. The Breakfast Room with its domed and mirrored ceiling is of particular interest and has inspired architects from the world over.

Many rooms in the house contain architectural fragments from all over the world, used in imaginative and innovative ways. You can see medieval stone work from the Palace of Westminster in the Monk’s Yard, and Roman architectural fragments and columns in the courtyard.

The contents of the house are simply remarkable. Every inch it seems is taken up by sumptuous furnishing, exotic curios, and objects d’art.

Soane was a wealthy and worldly 19th century gentleman, and his home and extensive collections are just what you would expect from someone of his wealth and station.

There is a huge collection of Soane’s architectural drawings and models. His fine collection of oil paintings can also be seen; Hogarth's and Turner's abound.

One very interesting item is the sarcophagus of Seti I which is located in the “Sepulchre Chamber” in the basement of the museum. According to the story, Soane hosted a three day long party to celebrate the addition of this tremendous treasure to his collection.

Walking through his splendid home, it is easy to imagine the decadent celebrations and elegant guests that must have been a part of Soane’s celebrated lifestyle. It was also his place of work, and what wonderful ideas he came up with here.

Of all the museums in London you must surely visit the wonderful Sir John Soane’s Museum.
