The National Maritime Museum in London was established in 1937 at Greenwich and has since grown into the largest museum of its kind on the world. The museum has important holdings of maritime art, manuscripts, cartography, and other papers recording the history of Britain’s seafaring adventures.
There are also ship models, plans, and navigational instruments to be seen here, as well as a great deal of information about oceans and ocean life in general.
The collections at the National Maritime Museum are arranged into galleries depicting different maritime themes.
Two of the most popular places in the museum are the All Hands and The Bridge Interactive Galleries, which are great for children, too.
At the All Hands Gallery visitors can fire a cannon, send semaphore signals, and even load up a cargo ship.
On the “Bridge” you can test your wits with a simulator that uses software and interactive navigational equipment to lead you through the challenges of navigating a ship at sea.
The Your Ocean Gallery works hard to educate us all about the connections between our world and the ocean, and how dependent we all are on the health and well being of our ocean ecosystems.
Learn more about the oceans at the Making Waves Gallery, where you can learn all there is to know about ocean habitats, currents, and types of waves.
The Explorers Gallery gives an overview of the history of exploration from ancient times to the modern era.
The Maritime London Gallery paints the colourful history of London town and how it was shaped by the trade and industry arising from its connection to the sea.
Anyone who is a fan of Admiral Nelson will be pleased to know both his uniform and his ponytail are on display at the museum, along with other artefacts of his life.
The National Maritime Museum in London is a wonderful tribute to the sea, one of the most important elements in the history and development of this island nation we call Britain.
