Portland Gallery in London
– Contemporary Art with a Scottish Accent

Portland Gallery London

The Portland Gallery in London is an art gallery near Piccadilly.

It was founded by Thomas Hewlett in 1984.

It is one of the leading art galleries in London, dealing mainly with Modern and Contemporary British paintings.

They act as advisors to people looking to purchase or sell art, and also are interested in buying art for their own collection.

The Portland Gallery has a particular specialization in the work of Scottish Colourists Hunter, Cadell, Peploe, and Fergusson.

They put on monthly exhibitions of both well known and new contemporary artists in their main hall.

One of the Portland Gallery’s artists was Scotsman Jack Vettriano.

Jack Vettriano was born in Fife in 1951 and left school to work as a mining engineer at age 16.

His girlfriend gave him a set of watercolours at age 21, and thus began a legendary career.

A self-taught artist, it would be 14 years before he felt ready to show his work to the public, but when he did it was met with acclaim at the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition; the two pieces he submitted were sold on the first day.

In 1990, he entered three paintings in the well known Summer Exhibition at London’s Royal Academy of Arts and was similarly met with critical acclaim.

Interest in his work grew rapidly from that point on, Vettriano has since had sell out shows in New York, Edinburgh, London, Johannesburg, and Hong Kong.

Jack Vettriano was awarded an honorary degree from Saint Andrews University and an OBE in 2003, and in 2004 his painting The Singing Butler went to Sotheby’s and set the record for a painting by a Scottish artist, selling for more than £700,000.

Jack Vettriano’s last exhibition with the Portland Gallery, Love, Devotion, and Surrender was in 2006, and he is no longer being represented by the gallery.

The Portland Gallery has a good reputation for its nurturing of new talents, bringing the best of up and coming artists to the public eye.

It is a great place to stop by and see intriguing art from names that might soon be known worldwide.

The Portland Gallery in London is the place to find cutting edge art with a Scottish flair.
