Pubs in Central London
– The Sherlock Holmes, I Presume?

The Sherlock Holmes

Pubs in Central London are plentiful, but pubs as unusual as the Sherlock Holmes are few and far between. This pub is also a bit of a museum dedicated to all things related to Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The location used to be the Northumberland Arms, but was converted in 1957 by Whitbread and Co. to house the exhibition of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia they had purchased from the Festival of Britain Tour. The location is ideal, right across the street from the location of Old Scotland Yard and next door to where Holmes and Watson used to go for Turkish baths.

The highlight of the collection is the room upstairs which is a full replica of the sitting room used by Holmes and Watson. There is a restaurant area on that same floor and diners can view the entire sitting room area through the glass partition and large windows.

There are many other interesting items to see in the pub, such as Watson’s service revolver and the stuffed head of the Hound of the Baskervilles.

The pub has an impressive Victorian façade, and carries the theme throughout the interior as well.

As you might expect, the Sherlock Holmes is a very popular tourist destination, since admirers of the books and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle come here from all over the world. It is also quite popular with the locals, as it is quite near Charing Cross station and it has built a good reputation over the years as a solid pub.

It serves a variety of traditional ales and ciders, including its own bitter, Sherlock Holmes Ale.

The menu is full of dependable pub favourites like Fish and Chips, Toad in the Hole, Shepherd’s Pie, and Spotted Dick with Sticky Toffee Pudding, and does not disappoint.

Service is prompt and friendly, you can choose to sit in the pub area downstairs or upstairs in the more formal restaurant area.

The pub even sells Sherlock Holmes souvenirs, everything from glassware to authentic Deerstalker caps.

When deciding on pubs in Central London it’s elementary; the Sherlock Holmes is a winner.
