Visiting pubs in London City?
The Hat and Tun is a nice traditional pub located on Hatton Wall. The name of the pub comes from Christopher Hatton, the original owner of the land around this area, and the traditional word for a 252 gallon cask of wine or ale.
The exterior is traditional but not dowdy, a bit more stylish that you might expect to see.
Inside, there is a bit of a hunting theme, stuffed heads and skulls of various animals decorate the walls. It has a cosy feel which is enhanced by the dark woods and comfortable seating. You can even sit up at the bar, which is a bit of a novelty in a city where the crush of patrons looking for their drink makes this unwise if not impossible.
The pub features a crackling open fire and dartboards, as well as a friendly and engaging staff ready to chat a bit, even if you aren’t a regular.
The Hat and Tun has a regular Quiz Night where you can compete with other patrons for the prize of a £100 bar tab. They also host a monthly Comedy Night on Thursdays.
The pub can get rather crowded at lunchtime, as it is located in a busy area with lots of hungry workers nearby.
The food is standard pub fare, things like Pie and Mash, Fish Pie, Scotch Eggs, and Hot Salt Beef Sandwiches.
They have an impressive array of lagers and ales, and an extensive international wine list.
They stop serving sit down meals at 3 PM but you can get bar snacks throughout the evening, including the Doorstep Sandwiches, which are rather substantial things like Cheddar and Tomato, Ham and Cheddar, or Slow Roasted Pork with sage and onion dressing and apple sauce.
The pub also fills up just after work with people stopping in for a drink before heading home.
Pubs in London City are plentiful, but excellent traditional ones like the Hat and Tun are not as plentiful as they should be.
