Queens’ College, Cambridge - Come to the Dark and Light Sides
Queens’ College, Cambridge was founded in 1448 by Margaret of Anjou, the Queen of Henry IV. Its motto is “Floreat Domus” or “May this House Flourish”, and flourish it has for almost 600 years now.

The college is part of the University of Cambridge system. It is open to the public except during exams and its medieval atmosphere makes it a very popular attraction for visitors. One unusual thing about Queens’ College is that it has buildings on both sides of the Cam River. On one side is the older half of the college, familiarly referred to as “The Dark Side”, and on the other is the newer part or “The Light Side”. The two halves of the college are spanned by a curious wooden bridge (pictured). This bridge has given rise to numerous rumours and stories about its origins and history. It is officially called the Wooden Bridge, but has been called the Mathematical Bridge, probably due to the popular rumour that it was designed by Sir Isaac Newton, and that enterprising students had disassembled it and could not rebuild it properly. In truth, the bridge was designed by William Etheridge and built by James Essex in 1749, which is 22 years after Sit Isaac Newton died. The bridge was rebuilt in 1905 on the same design, but using teak instead of oak. All visitors to the college are requested to enter via the Visitor’s Gate on Queens’ Lane. The Old Hall and the Chapel are generally open to visitors unless they are in use, but all other buildings are private. Please remember that this is a place of education and study and act accordingly, there are approximately 1,000 students here during the school year. There is no smoking or picnics allowed on the premises and visitors are requested to stay off the grass and river banks. There is a Visitor’s Shop at Visitor’s Gate where you can purchase gifts and souvenirs. Be sure to see the sundial in the Old Court, as it is quite impressive. Queens’ College, Cambridge has a great sense of history you are sure to enjoy.
