Renoir Cinema
- Art House Chic

The Renoir Cinema has a long history as the place to go for art films and small budget cinematic gems. Opened in 1972 as the Bloomsbury Cinema, this movie house was the brainchild of the Walter Reade Organisation and occupied a basement space in the Brunswick Square development which had just been built.

Over the years it worked hard to attract university students and film buffs with their unusual film offerings and experienced varying degrees of success; the theatre had to close at one point for several years.

Following an extensive renovation in 2006, the theatre is now part of the Curzon Cinema group, and these days it is enjoying probably the most successful time in its history. Londoners who love movies know that the Renoir is the place to discover new and delightful films.

It is certainly the first place you would go to see French films in London, but they also show independent movies from all over the world, retrospective, and re-releases of classics.

The cinema has two screens which aren’t large in comparison to those of the big chain movie houses, but the seating is nicely pitched so you won’t have an errant head blocking your view.

The movies here are more unusual and interesting than what you generally find at your run on the mill movie houses. Low budget and smaller films can win awards and critical acclaim, but they rarely make it to your local theatres so they frequently are overlooked by the general public.

The Renoir gives its patrons the opportunity to see some really good films that no one else is willing to screen.

In keeping with their love of the unusual, don’t expect to find the same old movie snacks here. The refreshments offered come from a small bar downstairs and range from beer and wine to organic delights like dried fruit and cakes.

This arthouse cinema should be on every film buff’s list of things to see in London.
