Spitalfields City Farm
- Vegetables Grow in London

Spitalfields Farm

Spitalfields City Farm is a remarkable place. Spread out over nearly an acre and a half of land in the densely populated Spitalfields area of the city, the farm is a real community asset. It is a registered charity and is organized and operated by its volunteer members.

The main goal of the farm and its dedicated volunteers is education; by bringing farm yard animals and vegetable gardens to the city they hope to inform people about where and how their food is produced from and perhaps to even inspire them to grow something on their own.

One of the most popular areas at Spitalfields City Farm is the Farm Yard where the animals are kept. There are many animals that you might expect to find there, such as pigs, chickens, goats, and sheep.

There is also a lovely donkey named Bayleaf and the farm recently received funds from the National Lottery to establish a Rare Breeds Program in an attempt to re-establish some of the traditional British breeds of farm animals from times gone by.

Volunteers help care for and feed the animals which makes for some very entertaining viewing at times.

The gardens at the farm are also very popular. They are also maintained by volunteers and there are a wide variety of things grown on the farm. Vegetables of all sorts are grown in season and can be purchased from the farm.

Wildflowers and herbs also abound at the farm. There are several gardens devoted to wildlife as the flowers and greenery that have been planted there are for the benefit of native animals and insects in the area.

There is a picnic area with garden furniture built by volunteers and a fire pit perfect for roasting marshmallows, too.

There are programs designed to show you what to pick from the garden and then how to prepare it as well.

Spitalfields Farm in London is an amazing success story and is sure to be a very enjoyable outing when travelling with children.
