St Martins Lane Hotel is a smart and stylish urban hotel managed by the Morgans Hotel Group. The high-concept interior is meant to inspire visitors and bring a sense of theatre and excitement to their guests.
The ultra-modern décor and minimalist vibe is designed to appeal to a hipper and perhaps younger demographic than the Grand Hotels of old. However, do not mistake the minimalist theme for spartan accommodations; St Martins Lane more than holds its own when it comes to comfort and luxury.
St Martins Lane was a filming location for Martin Vaughn’s 2004 gangster movie Layer Cake. Set in the criminal underworld of London, Layer Cake is an entertaining romp full of enough twists and turns to keep you guessing all the way through.
Daniel Craig stars as a character called “Mr. XXXX”, a cocaine dealer who sees himself as a businessman amidst a sea of thugs and brawlers. He has amassed a fortune from his illegal dealings and plans to retire from criminal life, but his friends and enemies are not about to make that easy for him.
As a goodbye present, he is assigned jobs designed to get him killed, and along the way meets the alluring Tammy (Sienna Miller) who is the girlfriend of the rather dim-witted mobster named Sidney (Ben Whishaw).
Craig invites Tammy to an afternoon tryst at the fabulous St Martins Lane Hotel, and we are given the opportunity to appreciate the smart and stylish room decor as well as Sienna Miller’s somewhat gratuitous display of black lace dainties. Before anything can happen besides admiring the view, Craig is kidnapped via room service trickery and ends up hanging from a Canary Wharf skyscraper.
He may be a drug dealer, but clearly he knows a good hotel when he sees it. If St Martins Lane is good enough for the ultra-hip Mr. XXXX, it’s certain to please even the coolest among us.
