The Lanesborough is an ultra-luxurious hotel located in exclusive Knightsbridge, overlooking Hyde Park. The 95 rooms and suites at the hotel are fitted out in royal style with plush furnishings and state of the art technology. The 24 hour butler service that is available to all Lanesborough guests makes it a bit of a stand out amongst even luxury hotels.
The ultimate in high end accommodations at this famous hotel is their Royal Suite. Rumoured to cost as much as £8,000 per night, the 2,900 square foot suite boasts three bedrooms, a drawing room, study, dining area, and kitchen.
It was in the Royal Suite that Stanley Kubrick chose as a filming location for his 1999 movie Eyes Wide Shut. It was to be Stanley Kubrick’s last film, and there was a great deal of hype surrounding its release.
The film tells the story of Dr. Bill Harford (Tom Cruise), a physician living in Manhattan with his wife Alice (Nicole Kidman).
After attending a party where both Bill and Alice flirt with other people, Alice admits to having sexual fantasies about strangers. This information begins to prey on Bill’s mind and he becomes obsessed with the idea of having a sexual encounter with a stranger.
Things get progressively weirder from there; Bill finally sneaks into a secret orgy but is exposed as a trespasser and thrown out. His curiosity piqued, Bill attempts to hunt down the secret group but is warned away as his contacts disappear suspiciously.
The scene filmed in the hotel's Royal Suite is near the end, when Bill meets with the rich and powerful Victor Ziegler (Sidney Pollack) who tells him to keep quiet about the secret orgy but denies any real wrongdoing.
Do we believe him, or is this just another game being played? This gorgeous hotel is the perfect site for filming such a scene, as it truly is the refuge of the wealthy and powerful.
