The Thames River, London
– “Liquid History”

The Thames River London

Without the Thames River, London would probably never have existed.

There is evidence of human habitation on its banks dating from Neolithic times.

The River Thames provided food, drink, and habitation for the earliest people and in later times it provided water power and has served as a major highway for the transportation of goods.

Even today the River Thames is still the supply for London’s drinking water.

These days however, the River Thames is most commonly used for recreation.

An enterprising company called Thames Clippers runs a commuter service using high speed catamarans in an attempt to circumvent the London traffic nightmares.

They depart from 12 piers along the river every 20 minutes and you can even pay for the trip with your Oyster Card.

They also offer a special River Roamer ticket that allows unlimited travel all day along the river, you can simply get on or off wherever you please and see a great deal of London along the way.

There are also many companies offering river cruises for the ultimate in sightseeing, some include dinner and a show.

The River Thames is also a popular spot for boating of all sorts.

Rowing has long been a popular pastime and there are over 200 rowing clubs along the Thames.

Rowing events are often being organized and it is very common to see people out rowing at any given time.

Sailing is another popular sport on the Thames; generally smaller boats such as Lasers are used.

Skiffing and punting are also practiced along the River Thames, although it is actually more competitive in the London area than in other locations.

Canoeing and Kayaking are popular, with the tidal sections being used for Sea Kayaking.

The Royal Canoe Club is located at Teddington on the Thames; founded in 1866, it is the oldest such organization in the world.

A curious London activity is the Thames Meander which is a long distance journey over the Thames either by swimming, running, or any of the abovementioned boating options.

Meanders are often done in a competitive setting.

If not for the Thames River, London would surely be a less interesting place.
