Whipsnade Animal Park
- Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

Whipsnade Animal Park, also known as the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, is owned and managed by the Zoological Society of London. It first opened in 1931 as the Whipsnade Park Zoo and some of the first animals in its collection were golden pheasants.

Whipsnade Animal Park

Over the years, many improvements and expansions have taken place and the current brown bear enclosure is the only part of the zoo that dates back to its early days. The zoo these days is large and modern, and committed to creating interactive and impressive displays.

Most children will simply love to spend a day at the zoo, and at Whipsnade Animal Park there is more than enough going on to satisfy the interests of the whole family. The park stretches out over 600 acres and is home to more than 227 species, many of which are endangered in the wild.

Whipsnade has world class programs and a stellar reputation when it comes to the breeding and conservation of endangered and threatened species.

There are some animals that are allowed to wander the grounds freely; you might see Patagonian mara, wallabies, peafowl, or Chinese water deer strolling in the area. The other wilder animals at Whipsnade are kept in specially designed enclosures.

Visitors can take their own cars through the “Passage to Asia” drive through area, or they can ride on the zoo’s free Safari Bus that stops at all of the main enclosure areas. Another nice way to see the zoo is to take a ride on the zoo’s steam railway that winds through the park, passing through popular areas like the elephant, camel, and rhino exhibits.

Other popular exhibits include the Chimpnasium, an amazing indoor/outdoor playground and gymnasium for the chimpanzees, Cheetah Rock, and the Rhinos of Nepal exhibit. There is also a Discovery Centre at the zoo that contains a Primate House, Reptile House, and Insect House.

Whipsnade Wild Animal Park is open during the day all year long and would make a terrific outing for anyone travelling with children.
